MAJOR GENERAL (Ret.) HUGH VAN ROOSEN is a graduate of the University of New York at Albany and the United States Army War College at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. 

 

General Van Roosen, a veteran of 41 years of military service, retiring in March 2021 as the Deputy Military Adviser at the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations where his primary responsibility is the operational oversight of nearly 100,000 troops from over 65 troop contributing countries serving in 18 United Nations missions. He is the first general officer from the United States to serve in a leadership role at the headquarters of the United Nations.

 

General Van Roosen first entered the Army in 1979 with the Infantry and later commanded a Special Forces company.  The general has commanded at all levels from Infantry platoon to one-star command. He commanded a battalion supporting the 4th Infantry Division in Iraq during 2004, and a brigade in Iraq from 2007-2008. He served as the Force Chief of Staff in the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) from 2012-2013 and as a Special Advisor to the UN headquarters for the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in 2014.  As a senior consultant for the United Nations, General Van Roosen completed an Independent Strategic Review on explosive ordnance for the UN Security Council in 2021 and is currently leading the “Leveraging Technology for Uniformed Peacekeepers” project in support of the UN Secretary General’s 2021 Digital Transformation Strategy. 

 

General Van Roosen’s decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Army Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Special Forces Tab, Master and Freefall Parachutist Badges, and Combat Action Badge.
